Term 4 – Week 6

The last few weeks have seen our Foundation students really consolidating their ability to perform a two-handed strike. We have been using T ball bats and stands, along with cricket bats and hockey sticks to put this all into action. It’s been a brilliant outcome as ALL of are students are easily able to stand side on, position themselves ready and make contact with various sized balls. It’s been a pleasure to see students pick up this skill so easily. I believe it is from the appropriate development of the FMS skills in the order we have gone through them. Next skill up is Bouncing and I am already aware of how much students love to bounce the balls. I’m looking forward to seeing how our final skill is performed.

Grade 1/2 students equally so, have had their work cut out learning the forehand strike (ground stroke) in tennis. This is a difficult one to learn, but with the patience and resilience all of our students have displayed we again have had some great progressions. When asking the students do they think they have improved, they have all said yes, as well as the idea they would love to carry on playing tennis. There are plenty of options in the community for our students to be involved in tennis. Our local club is Elsternwick Tennis club, so please check out what they have on offer. We also have a morning tennis club at school on a Wednesday ran by Hot Shots, so please check in at the school office for more information about that. Next up is also bouncing in modified games.

In Grade 3/4 students have recently experienced our new swim school venue at Starfish for a 5 day intensive programme swim. The feedback from students has been extremely positive. They have loved the fact that they have the pool to themselves, its smaller and they have less people in the lane. They also like that they just get to go with their class. We are seeking further thoughts regarding the length of the programme and this has gone out via compass. Please check it out and let us know. Students in P.E have then been creating their own target game, which has been heaps of fun. They have had assess to the sports cupboard and then have worked in small groups to make a game. They have then played another groups game and given some feedback about their game. This has been a great activity for students and I didn’t realise how much they would enjoy it. We had mini golf courses, hit the targets using tennis equipment, frisbee games, using equipment upside down and cricket modifications. All lots of fun. Next up is striking and fielding game sense.

In Grade 5/6 students have been busy every Friday with their 5/6 Inter-school sport games. We’ve had some great results; lots of wins, draws and only a few losses. In P.E they too have engaged really well in creating their own target games and next up is striking and fielding game sense.

In Grades 3-6 Our school swim carnival was a hit!! Heaps of fun team relays including kick board relays, ball relays, noodle relays as well as all the strokes. It was a gorgeous day at Prahran Pool and again this new venue was a treat! The whole centre to ourselves and we will certainly book the same place next year. The House support was more energised than ever before, and so many students did so many races! There were lots of ribbons.

The House scores were:

1st – Carrington

2nd – Loch

3rd – Furneaux

4th – Orrong

Swim trials for the District school team will take place in weeks 2,3, and 4 of Term 1 2020. Information will be out before then end of this Term.
